Review: Weird Little Birthday by Happyness

Album Rating: 5.9

With low-key guitar and tin can style vocal, Happyness brings a Wilco and Weezer feel with My Chemical Romance-esk lyrics. The college rock, garage band, slacker rock trio brings a melancholy and “thinly murderous” tone to this album. Happyness has taken the college rock back to the early 90’s.

9i2qjHappyness started recording Weird Little Birthday while in an abandoned church but quickly moved into the heated Jelly Boy Studios. London nights are cold and the trio felt much more comfortable and were more productive once inside.

This album is well done and the band kept total production control. Sometimes I get worried about a band holding control, but Happyness was in the very capable hands of Adam Lasus as he mixed their tracks. The mix was terrific, although I felt it was slow through the first songs. But the second half of the album really picked up and brought it together. “Great Minds Think Alike, All Brains Taste the Same,” “Anything I Do is All Right,” “It’s On You,” and “Lofts” were by far my favorite tracks.

Although Happyness has only been around for about a year, they have already managed to put out an EP and this full length album. These young artists have made huge strides in the world of music and have done more in a year than some bands have done in their entire careers.

Happyness was featured on NME as the radar band of the week and will be touring throughout June to promote this album. If you are an artist, contact Happyness
